This event is for the gallery opening festival of the traveling Feminist Fiber Art Exhibit hosted by Iris Nectar Studio. This DIY exhibit is featuring women artists and focusing on fiber art. (For those of you that aren't familiar, fiber art is work created with fiber: embroidery, weaving, knitting, crocheting, etc.) We are showcasing artists that play with the boundaries of the medium, so be prepared for some fun, unconventional, sexy work. You can read more about the exhibit on the event's website at www.feministfiberart.com.
On Friday, the opening will take the form of an art crawl through Somerville and end with musical performances. Artwork will be on display at Washington St. Art Center, Aeronaut Brewing Co. and Arts at the Armory; DJ Univers-AL (www.facebook.com/DJ.Univers.AL.Beats) will spin at Aeronaut; Feral Jenny (feraljenny.bandcamp.com), Ellen Siberian-Tiger (ellensiberiantiger.bandcamp.com) and Dent (dentband.bandcamp.com) will perform at the Armory!
On Saturday, we will have gallery hours from 12-4pm at Washington St. and Aeronaut will be open from 2pm-12pm with our artwork display. At Washington St. we will have a small reception with light refreshments during gallery hours as well as an artist's talk at 2:30pm with our featured artist Ýrúrarí, who flew in from Iceland for this event! She will be discussing her artwork and the costumes she made for Friday's performances and answering questions from the audience.
After the opening, artwork will remain on display in Aeronaut until 8/30 and at Washington St. until 8/29. The artwork installed at the Armory will only be up for the opening night event. After its residency in Somerville, the exhibit will move to Industry Lab in Cambridge before traveling to other neighborhoods in Greater Boston.
