The Map and the Territory

an exhibition of paintings by Sally Scopa

RECEPTION:
February 11, 2017 from 7-10 PM

ON VIEW:
February 11, 2017 to February 25, 2017 Saturdays from 12-4 PM

The works in “The Map and the Territory” challenge notions of the two-dimensional legacy of painting. Scopa incorporates the language, methods and techniques of architecture into her paintings to investigate how the two-dimensional surface of a painting can participate in structuring the three-dimensional world.

In some works, she modifies architectural images and prototypes in order to question accepted modes of pictorial and spatial representation. Others are based on the designs of textiles and carpets, drawing attention to the parallels between these domestic items and works of art, which both provide us with a means of assimilating architecture into our daily experience and render it habitable.

Originally from San Francisco, Scopa received her BA in Visual and Environmental Studies from Harvard University, where she now works as a teaching assistant in visual arts courses.
