“Yogi Bear meets Night of The Living Dead” is how Ansis Puriņšdescribes his artwork. Super Magic Forest, opening December 1 at Washington Street Gallery, 321 Washington Street, shows Ansis’s original drawings, related paintings, and comic books from his forthcoming graphic novel.
Ansis’s graphic novel, two years in the making, is inspired by the Saturday morning cartoons and Godzilla films on TV during his childhood in the 1980s. They were for him a paradise lost.
“I wasn’t able to watch Saturday morning cartoons as a child,” says Ansis. “Instead, I had to attend Latvian school.”
Although he could barely catch a glimpse of the shows, the images were seared into his memory. “When I came home from Latvian school, I just had to recreate the precious images that I had caught on TV before they slipped away," he says. "I’m super grateful for it now as an adult."
